The magnificent seven

Many thanks for your lovely comments following my oilcloth tutorial last week – and thanks for being so gentle with me.....

As you may have read in my posts 'Here's one I made earlier' and 'Here's another one I made earlier' I make my own frocks. Being rather short shop bought dresses are always way too long and I begrudge paying for a dress only to lob off six inches of fabric.

We’re off on another cruise in June and as there will be two formal evenings I always try and make at least one cocktail dress per cruise. I’ve scoured the various pattern websites for dress patterns and I’ve finally come up with a shortlist.

As I’m a self taught dressmaker I’ll tackle anything so it makes no difference if the pattern is for beginners or advanced, I buy it simply because I like it. There have been times though when I’ve ‘improvised’ or done it my own way to make things easier. May and Patrick from the Sewing Bee would be horrified !!!!

Here’s the final seven. I’ll definitely be making one, possible two, but I can’t decide on which one.  Which one would you choose?

Have a great week.

Love,

Gertie xx

PS why not pop over to Handmade Monday to see what other fellow craft bloggers have been up to.

  1. What a difficult decision. I really like the first one and the one in the middle with the four views. I know which ever you pick they will be beautiful as I saw your post on the one's you've made. I'd love to see you on the sewing bee. I don't think May and Patrick like people breaking the traditional sewing rules. Have a lovely week.

  2. Wow, they're all pretty... i think my fav has to be the top left though. I admire your courage with dress making, it always seems scarily difficult to me! I look forward to seeing your latest lovely dress when its finished :) x

  3. Ooh I like the top right, but that is because that's what I would choose for my body shape!! I am sure it will look great whatever you choose.

  4. Very nice - I really love the top middle dark red one or the bottom middle one in black with red flowers on. Top one looks harder so I'd do the black n red one. I can't follow patterns very well though and would rather make it up my own way too sometimes!

  5. Tough decision! My favourite is the first (top left), I love the shape of the dress. I really like the neckline of the last one too. Look forward to finding out which you choose... xx

  6. My choice would be the first one and the 4th one. Depending on where you're going would probably influence if you would make it with long sleeves or not. The fabric of the bottom middle is brilliant :)

  8. I love the one in he middle with the wide collar and three quarter sleeves - my older arms need a little more covering than they did years ago. Look forward to seeing which one (or ones?) you go with . Hope you have a good week.

  9. Oh, how fun to go on a cruise! I like the middle three but maybe that's because I'm older :( Really, all of them are lovely and I'm sure the one you choose will be perfect.

  10. Lovely patterns, I really like the one in the middle of the top row, and the one in the middle of the bottom row, it's so hard to choose a favourite.

  11. I guess it might depend a bit on how warm it is going to be on the cruise, but I like top right, and also although it is probably the simplest "big red flowers".
